Friends of Lewes Planning Committee Report 4 May 2017

Representations made on planning applications following the meeting of the Planning Committee held on 4 May 2017.

Representations made to planning applications in weeks ending 11, 18 and 25 April and 2 May 2017

Week ending 18 April

SDNP/17/00558/HOUS: Loft conversion, rear dormer, rooflights and replacement of front bay windows.  14 Morris Road.
Friends of Lewes support the proposed replacement of uPVC windows with timber ones that replicate the originals. However, it objects to the design of the dormer window in this application which is considers to be too large, extends to the ridge and has poor detailing with respect to the fenestration; the windows appear to be unequal in size.

SDNP/17/01684/FUL: Demolition of existing buildings and construction of five family dwellings (C3) together with associated parking and landscaping. 68-74 Malling Street.
Friends of Lewes support a lower density development for this site with fewer dwellings than in the previous proposal, to which it objected.  The Society considers the proposed development to be well designed and supports the use of slate gables which will break up the bulk of the principal elevation.  It supports the scale of the development and the modern design, conditional on careful detailing and construction delivering high quality buildings. The west side of Malling Street has a history of commercial development of poor design and inappropriate scale and this development presents an opportunity to restore the residential balance of the street.

Week ending 25 April

SDNP/17/01393/HOUS: Replace garage door with larger garage door (460mm wider). 15 Cleve Terrace.
Friends of Lewes have no objection in principle to the widening of the garage entrance door. However, the proposal will result in the flint infill panels, which are currently centered in the left hand pillar, becoming immediately adjacent to the door. It therefore objects to the poor design, the outcome of which will be a clumsy unbalanced elevation.

SDNP/17/01469/HOUS: Replacement of existing windows with uPVC double glazed units. 53 Cluny Street.
Friends of Lewes consider timber windows, which were a feature of the original development, should be replaced on a like for like basis in the Conservation Area. The use of uPVC windows is inappropriate as the materials do not respect the character and appearance of this part of the Lewes Conservation Area.

SDNP/17/01886/FUL: Section 73A retrospective application for the retention of a timber smoking shelter. The Volunteer 12 Eastgate Street.
Friends of Lewes object to the scale of the smoking shelter and the materials used. The large shelter dominates and obscures the front elevation of 11 Eastgate Street and ruins the appearance of an attractive historic building and the wider street scene within the Conservation Area.  The materials used in its construction are inappropriate as they do not fit in with the character of the Conservation Area.
