Duncan Baker-Brown: Design in the Age of Emergency, 23 November 2021, 7:30pm, Friends of Lewes talk

Duncan Baker-Brown is an architect, academic and environmental activist, founder of BakerBrown, and Climate Literacy Champion – University of Brighton [More…]

These are utterly incredible times for everybody. Governments have responded to the Coronavirus pandemic like no other human-made event in history. With the gathering of COP26 in Glasgow, we hope that this ability to pass legislation, to mobilise people and resources for good, could lead to a similar effort to tackle the climate emergency and the construction industry’s part in it.

Over 90% of UK citizens live in UK regions where the local authority has declared a climate and ecological emergency. Politicians have committed to being Net-Zero Carbon by 2030 or 2035. The UK Green Building Council, the RIBA, and the London Energy Transformation Initiative pretty much agree on energy benchmarks to take the construction industry on a very steep decent towards Net-Zero Carbon by 2050. This is significant as the industry accounts for about 45% of annual carbon emissions, 50% of raw material consumption and 60% of the UK’s waste.

Duncan’s presentation will consider concepts, ideas and case studies that demonstrate how closed-loop, circular systems can change the way we design, build, inhabit, maintain and de-construct our built environment –  in short how the construction sector can make a huge difference to the climate and ecological emergency.

The talk will be free, and all are welcome.
