Friends of Lewes Planning Committee Report 3 May 2018

Representations made on planning applications following the meeting of the Planning Committee held on 3 May 2018.

Weeks ending 10, 17 & 24 April & 1 May 2018

Weekly list as at 10 April 2018

SDNP/18/00648/FUL:  Change of Use from office to residential, internal and external alterations including a two storey rear extension, the removal of the lift shaft, new openings and partitions and replacement of modern stairs. 212 High Street (Ex Rural Sussex offices)
The return of this significant listed building to its original use is welcomed by the Friends of Lewes. The Society has no objection to the modest change to the rear elevation which will be scarcely visible from East Street. The quality of the information provided in the application is commended. (Neutral comment)

Weekly list as at 17 April 2018

SDNP/18/00908/FUL: Three storey rear extension to existing external courtyard to provide additional bathrooms, communal internal stair and hallway, internal and external alterations to convert existing six 1 bed flats in original house to six 2 bed flats, replacement of all existing windows in original house with double glazed windows, external works including provision of new steps, ramp, railings and retaining walls. Saxonbury Juggs Road
Friends of Lewes welcome the proposal to renovate and extend this long-empty building to provide residential accommodation. It hopes Lewes District Council will be making appropriate provision elsewhere for providing accommodation for the people they used to place there. (Neutral  comment)

SDNP/18/00973/HOUS: Demolition of existing garage and garden room and erection of a single storey side and rear extension. 16 North Way
Friends of Lewes object to the flat roof box design of the extension and the window proportions, which are out of keeping with the existing street view and adjacent house.

SDNP/18/01314/HOUS: Conversion of loft space to habitable room involving erection of a rear dormer window. 10 Wheatsheaf Gardens
Friends of Lewes object to the excessive mass and bulk of the rear box dormer which is too wide, too high and will unbalance the existing roofscape.

SDNP/18/01534/HOUS: Two storey side extension, single storey rear extension and small front extension with new porch canopy to the existing property.  16 Hamsey Crescent
Friends of Lewes object to the impact the extensive extensions will have on the existing street scene and its close proximity to the neighbouring house.

SDNP/18/01708/HOUS: Rear extension and loft conversion.  15 Clare Road
Friends of Lewes object to the enormous rear box dormer, which is too large and will impact adversely on the neighbouring property and the symmetry of the pair of semi-detached houses.

SDNP/18/01748/HOUS: Single storey rear extension.  13 Mountfield Road
Friends of Lewes are concerned that the very large extension will have an adverse impact on the street scene when viewed from the access road to Medwyn House. (Objection)

Weekly list as at 24 April 2018

SDNP/18/01799/HOUS: Renewal of leaking soil/drainage pipe and replacement window sills in the loft rooms. 74-75 High Street. (Ex Hugh Rae)
This is an important historic building on a prominent site which sadly has been much neglected in recent years. The applicants propose modest remedial works to areas most in need and Friends of Lewes support their intention to carry out essential repairs. The Society would encourage a comprehensive survey being undertaken of the building and the preparation of a prioritised programme of repairs. It would welcome the plastic guttering being replaced with materials that are more in keeping with the age of the building.

SDNP/18/01993/HOUS: Replace existing windows with double glazed units and replace existing ground floor bow window with new bay window.  9 De Warrenne Road
Friends of Lewes have no objection to the extension of the existing bow window down to ground level, provided the brick matches. However, the Society objects to the use of uPVC replacement windows in the Conservation Area, especially as the neighbouring identical house replaced the original timber windows with matching timber ones some ten years ago under LW/07/1552. The replacement windows should be in painted timber.
