Friends of Lewes Planning Committee Report 1 September 2022

Representations made on planning applications following the meeting of the Planning Committee held on 1 September 2022:

SDNP/22/03222/FUL: Installation of new ducting to the rear property, addition of one slimline roof lantern, addition of green roof onto existing flat roof, upgraded door to rear of property 84 High Street. 84 Flat High Street.
The Friends of Lewes would like to comment on the lack of information regarding the proposed ducting to the rear of the property, as the selection of materials to be used or the colour of any applied paint could materially affect the visual appearance of the proposed duct.

SDNP/22/03271/ADV: Illuminated digital display (TV) Installed in window. 217 High Street.
The Friends of Lewes object to the illuminated digital display already installed in this property in the precinct and fully supports the comments made by the Conservation Officer regarding the interruption of the appreciation of the street scene within the Conservation Area.

SDNP/22/03451/FUL: Construction of three commercial buildings for light industrial or warehouse/trade counter use (Class E or B8). Retention of existing watercourse and creation of landscaped biodiversity buffer zone along north and eastern boundaries. Existing access road to be extended with vehicle turning area and associated parking to be provided. Land East of Malling Industrial Estate Brooks Road.
The Friends of Lewes supports this application and suggests that further consideration be given to making more use of the proposed landscaping areas to be used as an amenity space by both employees on the site and by local residents.

SDNP/22/03581/FUL: Change of use of commercial space (C1) to 2no apartments comprising of 1no one bedroom unit and 1no two bedroom unit. 191 High Street Crown Hotel.
The Friends of Lewes object to this proposal and in particular to the loss of commercial space at street level at this important location adjacent to the war memorial at the top of school hill, where it is considered essential to maintain a ‘public’ rather than a ‘private’ frontage. The Society also considers that the design of the proposed apartments is poor, as it includes inadequate daylighting to bedroom accommodation in the basement.

SDNP/22/03739/TCA: T1 – Rowan – Fell/Re-plant due to fungal disease (ganoderma austral). 20C King Henrys Road.
Friends of Lewes commends the plan for re-planting.

SDNP/22/03803/TCA: T1 – Sycamore – Fell and replant with ornamental species. 17 New Road.
Friends of Lewes accept the reasons for felling the Sycamore and recommend another small tree to be planted in its place.
