Stephanie Smith: The Portable Antiquities Scheme in the Lewes Area
The Portable Antiquities Scheme encourages the voluntary recording of archaeological objects found by members of the public in England and Wales.
Each year, many thousands of objects are discovered, many of these by metal-detector users, but also by people whilst out walking, gardening or going about their daily work. These objects can be recorded onto the Portable Antiquities Scheme database by Finds Liaison Officers (FLOs) for use in research projects and the database is a well-known resource with requests to use the full data available submitted by specialists throughout the world.
Stephanie Smith, the Finds Liaison Officer for East and West Sussex, will give an overview of what her job involves and what the Scheme has achieved to date. She will also examine more closely some of the most interesting finds discovered in East Sussex, providing a closer look at Lewes and the surrounding parishes. To complement the lecture, Stephanie will provide a display of artefacts for people to handle that illustrate what one metal detectorist has uncovered locally.

All are welcome from 7.00pm for free refreshments and updates on the Group’s activities. The talk will begin promptly at 7:30pm and will finish by 9.00pm.
There is an entry fee for these meetings, payable at the door, of £2 for members, and £3 for non-members.
