Visit one of Lewes’ best kept secrets
One of the best discoveries of the Friends of Lewes recently-completed tree survey, part of its Urban Arboretum project, was a private arboretum in South Malling. Part of the Malling Deanery grounds, this arboretum was largely planted in the seventies and has a wide variety of interesting and unusual trees, anchored by a venerable black poplar. It is a unique and attractive collection in a beautiful and peaceful setting near St Michael’s church at the bottom of Church Lane.
The current owners are opening the arboretum to the public on the evening of June 20th, from 7:00 to 8:30. Admission is £5, to cover the cost of a glass of wine and a guided tour by Hugh Morris, a professional arboriculturalist from Plumpton College who is familiar with the tree collection. All are welcome.
