Representations made on planning applications following the meeting of the Planning Committee held on Thursday, 8 January 2015.

Weeks as at 9, 16 and 22 December 2014 and 6 January 2015

Week as at 9 December

SDNP/14/05841/FUL: Nationwide Building Society, 59 High Street. Removal of fire escape stair and balcony and erection of replacement fire staircase.
Friends of Lewes welcomes the proposal to tidy up the dilapidated rear elevation of this building. However, the Society objects to the scale and design of the proposed fire staircase, which is visually intrusive, contrary to policies ST3 and H5 of the Lewes District Council Local Plan.

Week as at 16 December

SDNP/14/06306/LIS: Riverside Cafe Bar, Riverside, High Street. Erection of retractable awning
Friends of Lewes objects to the proposed awning which does not relate to the structure of the listed building, will detract from its fenestration and adversely affect its character, contrary to policy H2(b) of the Lewes District Council Local Plan.

SDNP/14/06326/HOUS: 2 Winterbourne Close Single storey rear extension and roof extension with dormer window and rooflight
Friends of Lewes objects to the scale of the proposed development and the conversion of the existing hipped roof to a gable end, which do not respect the character of neighbouring buildings contrary to policy ST3(a) of the Lewes District Council Local Plan. It also objects to the scale of the proposed dormer which is too wide and is not set down from the ridge.

Friends of Lewes supports the improvements proposed to the access staircase.

More Historic Plaques for Lewes

Five more plaques have recently been put up around Lewes, marking buildings with a particularly interesting history or sites where a former use has disappeared. This brings the number of these plaques to 33. These have mostly been a joint venture between the Town Council and the Friends of Lewes, who have undertaken the research.

The new ones can be found at the sites of the Odeon Cinema in Cliffe High Street and the Cinema de Luxe on School Hill, on Southover Forge (see below), the sculptural panels above the entrance to County Hall by William Mitchell and one to celebrate the many clockmakers in Lewes in the 18th century.

It is planned to identify more suitable locations for similar plaques in Lewes in the coming year. Please send any suggestions you may have for consideration to enquiries@friends-of-lewes.org.uk

Historical plaques in Lewes – a comprehensive survey

There are many plaques around Lewes, commemorating events, buildings and individuals. These have been erected by the Town Council, Friends of Lewes and others over the years. Audrey Jarvis of the Friends of Lewes completed a survey in June 2013, and compiled this updated inventory in January 2015.

Lewes History Group Meeting – Monday 9 February 2015, 7:00 for 7:30pm

John Kay: The Tory MPs for Lewes, 1874-1997

Lewes prides itself on being different and, despite being a prosperous Home Counties constituency, it is over 20 years since it last elected a Conservative M.P.  However, for more than a century, from 1874 to 1997, it was represented by seven successive long-serving Tories, sandwiched between the Liberal Lord Pelham and the Liberal Democrat Norman Baker. At first inspection these seven Tories seem a rather typecast group – privately-educated, well-heeled and well-connected country gentlemen with Oxbridge or military backgrounds. Without exception, they appear establishment figures. Peer a little closer and the homogeneity disappears, allowing the individual characters to emerge. Some had real accomplishments to their credit, though none achieved high office. It may not have helped that several were hardly Tories at all in their political beliefs. One was a direct descendant of Earl Grey (of the tea) and another of Charles II and Nell Gwynne. Yet another was the godfather, and the early political patron, of a prime minister whose name you will recognise.
