Friends of Lewes Planning Committee Report August 2014 – updated

Friends of Lewes Planning Committee

Representations made on planning applications following the meeting held on Thursday, 7 August 2014.

SDNP/14/03805/FUL  Change of use, The Courthouse Friars Walk
Friends of Lewes has no objection to the proposed change of use. In the absence of an acceptable design for a replacement building it welcomes the fact that alternative uses are being considered.

Applications as at 8 July

SDNP/14/03297/HOUS First floor extension over existing ground floor side extension with associated alterations to the roof, rear facing dormer & street facing rooflights. 10 Caburn Crescent
The Friends of Lewes Society objects to this application which it considers contrary to ST3 of the Lewes District Council Local Plan. This property is one of a pair of semi-detached houses and the proposed dormer is too large and of unsympathetic design. The window area is excessive and out of proportion with the rest of the house. The development proposed fails to conserve or enhance the natural beauty of the National Park.

 Applications as at 15 July

SDNP/14/03384/ADV Installation of fascia signs. Unit 1 Pannetts Building Railway Lane
Friends of Lewes objects to the scale, colour and materials of the proposed fascia signs, which detract from the character and appearance of the surrounding Conservation Area, contrary to policy H5 of the Lewes District Council Local Plan.

SDNP/14/03490/HOUS Installation of replacement UPVC windows. 100 Western Road
Friends of Lewes objects to the use of very thick uPVC frames, which are a crude approximation of traditional windows. It believes timber windows or uPVC sash windows with a thinner profile should be used in the Conservation Area to meet policy H5 of the Lewes District Council Local Plan.

Applications as at 22 July

SDNP/14/03483/FUL Installation of a covered cycle shelter Friars Walk Car Park Court Road
Friends of Lewes supports the provision of a covered cycle shelter but objects to the inappropriate design of the shelter in the Conservation Area, which it considers is contrary to policy H5(c) of the Lewes District Council Local Plan. The design does not respect the design of existing buildings in the area and would set a precedent for similar inappropriate structures elsewhere in the Conservation Area. The Society also has some concern about the gradual loss of car parking spaces in the town whilst recognising that there may not be other suitable alternatives for a cycling stand in the vicinity.

SDNP/14/03500/HOUS Erection of two storey extension to side and single storey extension to rear. 28 Gundreda Road
Friends of Lewes objects to dysfunctional design of this development and questions whether it is possible to construct the first floor extension as presented in the drawings submitted with the application.

 Applications as at 5 August

SDNP/14/03743/FUL Reconstruction of south facing gable wall. 223 High Street
Friends of Lewes supports the proposal to carefully remove all existing stone detailing for reuse in the reconstruction but objects to the use of new brick in the front elevation gable. The existing bricks should be reclaimed and reused wherever possible.

SDNP/14/03787/HOUS Erection of ground floor rear extension, a two storey side extension, a new garage to replace car port. 41 Houndean Rise
Friends of Lewes objects to the flat roof proposed for the new garage and believes it should built with a pitched roof to match the existing roof and new roofs of the rear and two storey extensions.
