Friends of Lewes Planning Committee Report 3 February 2022

Representations made on licencing and planning applications following the meeting of the Planning Committee held on 3 February 2022.

The following representations were submitted to the Lewes District Council Licencing Committee:

The Paddock, The Old Motor Road, The Old Racecourse.
Friends of Lewes object to the application for a permanent seasonal licence which will materially change the nature of the area and cause nuisance to users of a special area renowned for its peacefulness. A licenced pop-up bar is an inappropriate development in an area of very visible, quiet open land within an unspoilt natural environment.  It will encourage drinkers to congregate, resulting in noise, disturbance and nuisance to nearby residents, the risk of anti-social behaviour and activities likely to be to the detriment of the character of the area.


The following representations were submitted to the SDNPA:

SDNP/21/05546/FUL: Change of use of basement and ground floor from retail E(a) use to a restaurant and takeaway E(b) with associated external works comprising installation of 1no. flue to rear elevation. 50 High Street.
Friends of Lewes comments that refuse would need to be taken through the restaurant and take away area to the High Street frontage and could lead to bins being left on the High Street in a visually prominent location. The take away service could also lead to parking pressure in the High Street close to the junction with Station Street.

SDNP/21/06272/HOUS: Hip to gable loft conversion with front and rear box dormer and 1 no. rooflight to front roof slope, demolition of single-storey rear and side structures and erection of single storey rear and side extensions with 5 no. rooflights to flat roofs and installation of wood burning stove flue through rear roof slope. 1 Clare Road.
Friends of Lewes object to the excessively large box dormer proposed on a low single storey building, especially in a row of houses of equal height.  It would be completely out of scale and contrary to the SDNPA draft ‘The Design Guide (Draft) Supplementary Planning Document.

SDNP/21/06383/HOUS: Hip to gable roof extension with dormer to rear and two rooflights to front. 35 Hamsey Crescent.
Friends of Lewes object to the proposed gable roof extension which spans the full width of the house and is overwhelmingly oversized and out of scale.  It would unbalance the symmetry of this semi-detached building.

SDNP/21/06441/HOUS: Single-storey rear extension, replacement balcony and rear dormer.  24 St Johns Terrace.
Friends of Lewes comments that the proposed dormer is a lumpy design and will be visible from the Offham Road. GRP is an inappropriate material to be used for the roof in the Conservation Area and lead or zinc should be used.

SDNP/21/06458/HOUS: Demolition of existing outbuilding and erection of a shed. 10 East Street.
Friends of Lewes has no objection in principle to the development but objects to the application because all of the details of the shed are subject to confirmation.

SDNP/22/00027/LDP: New front porch, conversion of existing garage to habitable accommodation, alterations and provision of new window and roof light openings, new rear decking area. 93 Highdown Road.
Friends of Lewes comments that the box design of the front porch is not consistent with the neighbouring houses, which have pitched roofs.

SDNP/22/00058/HOUS: Proposed rear extension to provide a third bedroom, with a glazed link between the new and existing building. 6 Market Lane.
Friends of Lewes support the carefully tailored solution to a difficult site.

SDNP/22/00189/HOUS: Replacement of UPVC windows with white painted timber sash windows to the rear elevation and re-location for timber back door and insertion of french doors. 30 Morris Road.
Friends of Lewes support the replacement of uPVC windows with timber sash windows.

SDNP/21/06391/FUL St Michael’s Church, Church Lane, South Malling.   Replace lamp posts with single lamp post.
SDNP/22/00057/HOUS 43 Fitzjohns Road.   Demolish garage and erect single storey side extension.
SDNP/22/00144/HOUS 15 Gundreda Road.   Demolish conservatory and erect side extension.
SDNP/22/00166/HOUS 50 Middle Way.   Remove car port and construct two storey side extension.
SDNP/22/00175/HOUS 58 Valence Road.   Single storey side and rear extension.
SDNP/22/00230/HOUS 26 Windover Crescent.   Part single-storey, part two-storey side and rear extension, convert garage, replace all windows.
SDNP/22/00237/LIS 1 Malling Street.   Re-render and paint side, repair and paint woodwork and replace broken down pipe.
SDNP/22/00047/FUL 3 St Martin’s Lane.   Demolish outbuilding and erect single storey rear extension.
SDNP/22/00182/HOUS 24 Monks Way.   Single storey rear extension.
SDNP/22/00291/LDP 9 Church Lane South Malling. Demolish rear conservatory and erect single storey extension.
SDNP/22/00385/FUL Sussex Downs College Mountfield Road. Air source heat pump enclosure and plant.
