Friends of Lewes Planning Committee Report 5 May 2022

Representations made on planning applications following the meeting of the Planning Committee held on 5 May 2022:

SDNP/22/00290/ADV: 1no upgrade to digital display: 94 Malling Street.
Friends of Lewes object to this application and consider that a changing illuminated display would be distracting to drivers and as such become a safety hazard at this location. Furthermore, the proposal would be contrary to specific policies in the South Downs National Park Local Plan relating to a presumption against internally illuminated signs as part of the Dark Night Skies objective.

SDNP/22/01386/FUL: Removal of existing steel communal staircase window and replacement with double glazed PVCu: The Mount 47 Grange Road.
Friends of Lewes object to the use of PVCu in the Conservation Area and recommends that the existing steel window be replaced with a double glazed steel unit with similar appearance to the existing window.

SDNP/22/01453/HOUS: 4 Earls Garden: Demolition of existing conservatory to replace with single storey rear extension.
Friends of Lewes object to both the use of uPVC windows and the application of GRP as a roof finish in the Conservation Area.

SDNP/22/01620/CND: St Johns Church Hall, Talbot Terrace: Variation of Condition 2 (Plans) in relation to approval SDNP/21/01784/FUL to replace front doors of units 1 & 3 with windows and alteration to front dormers.
Friends of Lewes object to the proposed variation and prefer the approved proposal which incorporates separate front doors to each of the three terraced houses.

SDNP/22/01674/HOUS: 24 The Avenue: Erection of summerhouse with concrete base.
Friends of Lewes support this application but would wish to comment that there appears to be no specific provision for collecting the rainwater from the proposed summerhouse.

SDNP/22/01704/HOUS: 37D South Street: Single storey rear extension, installation of rear dormer and front rooflight and replacement of windows and door to front.
Friends of Lewes object to this application as no details have been provided illustrating the proposed rear dormer.

SDNP/22/01752/HOUS: Mill House Mill Road: Replacement of single storey side and rear extensions and internal alterations.
Friends of Lewes support this proposal as a positive improvement to the existing house.

SDNP/22/01836/FUL: 20/21 High Street: Partial change of use of the ground floor from Class E to residential. Minor external alterations to replace existing windows with doors on the ground floor, side and rear to facilitate the proposed use of the building and for access.
Friends of Lewes support the principal of this proposal but have a number of detailed concerns regarding the size and location and adequate provision for bin stores and bicycle storage and their possible visual impact on the Fuller’s Passage elevation, which is considered to be an important consideration within the Conservation Area.

SDNP/22/01861/LIS: 32 Friars Walk: Replacement of rear single storey extension, internal modifications, restoration and other external works.
Friends of Lewes support this proposal, especially with regard to the proposed external works for improving access for the disabled with the provision of a new gate from Styles Field.

SDNP/22/02052/FUL: Land at the western end of Juggs Road: Creation of sand school.
Friends of Lewes support this application and it is noted that access for horses is proposed from adjacent farmland rather than using Juggs Road. It is also noted that there are no proposals for introducing lighting and consequently with the retention of existing hedgerows considers that there will be minimal impact on the wider landscape setting.

SDNP/22/01775/CND: Variation 3 of planning application SDNP/21/02995/HOUS to excavate slightly further into the root protection zone of the retained tree T4.
Friends of Lewes have no objections as long as manual excavation is used, to protect the retained tree.
