The Friends of Lewes have considered this planning application.
When the former Magistrates Court was operational this site was used as a private car park for the Court. The Society hoped it would continue in that capacity for the Premier Inn and its representations on that planning application SDNP/14/01650/FUL included a request that this should happen.
When the South Downs National Park Authority determined this planning application they took advice from East Sussex County Council on parking issues and decided that as the Premier Inn parking requirements would largely be overnight when more public parking is available and as other evolving proposals in the town would provide additional public parking, none needed to be provided in connection with the Premier Inn.
Whilst the Society was disappointed at this decision, and as the owner of the site now under consideration is not prepared to make it available for parking, the Society recognises that this matter cannot be pursued through the current planning application.
The use of the site for housing is predicated in the Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment whilst the construction of 9 houses will go towards meeting the total number of houses which the town of Lewes is expected to provide in the period of the Lewes District/South Downs National Park Authority’s Core Strategy.
With regard to design the proposed development is a well-considered scheme that, subject to good detailing, will enhance this corner site and the adjoining housing into the overall townscape. It supports the change of scale that makes the centre of the terrace higher than the wing ends and the way in which the building turns the corner. Materials, fenestration and the silhouette are all considered to be good and the provision of garden and parking space for the occupants of the houses is supported.
Subject to these comments the Friends of Lewes has no objections to this planning application.
